Cache County is one of the fastest-growing areas in Utah, and with that growth comes opportunities and challenges. I am committed to ensuring that your concerns are heard, resources are secured, and real solutions are implemented.
Key Policy Issues in Cache County & My Plan as Vice Chair
1. Voting Rights and Election Integrity
- Challenge: Utah's recent legislative changes have altered the state's universal mail-in voting system. House Bill 300 requires voters to proactively opt-in to receive mail-in ballots, ending the previous practice of automatically sending ballots to all registered voters. This shift could disproportionately affect rural communities like Cache County, where mail-in voting has been a vital tool for increasing voter participation.
- What I Will Do as Vice Chair:
- Advocate for Accessible Voting: Work to ensure that all voters, especially those in rural areas, have easy access to voting methods that suit their needs.
- Promote Voter Education: Implement comprehensive voter education programs to inform residents about new voting procedures and deadlines.
- Collaborate with Local Leaders: Partner with county officials to mitigate the impact of these legislative changes.
- Monitor Legislative Developments: Stay vigilant about further legislative changes that could affect voting rights and work to protect the integrity and accessibility of elections.
2. Transportation, Infrastructure, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)
- Challenge: Cache County faces severe traffic congestion due to higher vehicle miles traveled on local roads compared to state roads. The county’s growing population is straining existing infrastructure, and current road expansion proposals may not be enough to address the long-term needs of the region.
- Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) as a Solution:
- As an Economist, I recently completed an Advanced Air Mobility Economic Benefits Study for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), highlighting how this emerging technology can improve transportation, economic development, and medical access in rural communities like Cache County.
- AAM includes the use of electric aircraft for passenger travel, cargo transport, and medical evacuations, offering a sustainable and efficient transportation alternative.
- What I Will Do as Vice Chair:
- Promote Investment in AAM: Advocate for state and federal funding to implement AAM infrastructure in Cache County.
- Support Infrastructure Improvements: Back projects that enhance roads, bridges, and connectivity while incorporating new transportation technologies.
- Leverage Economic Expertise: Utilize my economic analysis experience to secure grants and policy support for AAM initiatives.
- Expand Regional Connectivity: Work with business leaders, healthcare providers, and local government to integrate AAM solutions that improve mobility, economic development, and emergency response services in Cache County.
3. Housing Affordability and Growth Management
- Challenge: Cache County is experiencing rapid population growth, requiring 11,600 additional housing units by 2030 to meet demand. Current zoning laws favor low-density, single-family homes, limiting affordable and diverse housing options. Overcrowded schools are also a growing concern.
- What I Will Do as Vice Chair:
- Advocate for Pro-Housing Policies: Support reforms that encourage affordable, workforce, and mixed-use housing developments.
- Collaborate on Zoning Reforms: Work with local leaders to promote zoning laws that allow for multi-family developments and smart growth strategies.
- Secure Funding for Education: Engage with state and federal partners to obtain funding for expanding and building new school facilities to accommodate the growing population.
- Mobilize Community Support: Engage with residents to build support for sustainable and inclusive housing policies.
4. Fiscal Policies and Taxation
- Challenge: Recent tax increases, including a 0.3% sales tax for public safety and a 12% property tax hike, have raised concerns among residents about the financial burden and the need for transparent fiscal policies.
- What I Will Do as Vice Chair:
- Ensure Fiscal Transparency: Advocate for clear communication regarding tax policies and government spending.
- Promote Equitable Taxation: Support tax policies that are fair and do not disproportionately impact working families.
- Explore Alternative Revenue: Identify and promote alternative revenue sources to fund essential services without overburdening taxpayers.
- Engage the Community: Foster open dialogues with residents to understand their concerns and priorities regarding taxation and public spending.
